Why I am no longer interested in Grad School
For the past few years I have been thinking about going to grad school. I went to a few MBA info sessions at Babson College since they have the nations best Two Year Entrepreneurial Studies Program. However, I started losing interest at the first info session.
I sat in on a class, which was very interesting and I even spoke to a few students about the program. They all seemed to think it was great, however, one thing stood out to me. None of these students had the entrepreneurial spirit that I thought they would have. I couldn’t find one student who wanted to create their own company, not one. They were more or less all trying to climb the corporate ladder. I was confused by this so I asked a worker in the MBA admission dept and they didn’t have a good answer for me. So I researched a little more in hopes of finding out why this was. I came up empty until a I spoke with a friend who graduated from Babson undergrad about 10 years ago. I told him I was thinking about getting my MBA and he said why? I replied with the common answer in that it would help me build a new company. He said, you have already done this. He was correct. He said, no classroom will teach you to run a business. He went onto say that i have more experience than anyone sitting in those classes. Nothing compares to real world experience. I guess he made a good point.
My reason for wanting my MBA was not to learn via a text book, I wanted the contacts, the relationships, the mentors… I figured my Professors could help me build a contact list and a strong network. I would rather have 100 amazing contacts than a piece of paper from Babson. So, I guess I wanted the degree for the wrong reason. Sure, its more than a piece of paper to my parents but to me its a a piece of paper . Tt’s what you do with the paper after you receive it that counts. Don’t get me wrong, that paper will open up doors, but so will those contacts.
So, right now, I am going to put getting MBA on hold. I am not opposed to getting the degree, but I have to want it for the right reasons.
