If not, you are most likely going to lose your job in the near future. Right now, the economy is crap. Everyone is feeling it. I met with a successful attorney who works for one of the larger law firms in Boston last week and he said his firm is feeling the effects of the economy. This attorney is 65 years old. He is a partner and runs the real estate division of the firm. Unlike my father who graduated law school around the same time, he cannot retire. He was surprised my father retired 2 years ago.
His law firm is not hiring and he said he feels bad for those who recently graduated law school because they will not be able to pay off their loans. Having your law degree or any degree right now means very little. Sure, higher education is a good idea, but it does not make you indispensable.
What am I getting at?
In this new world of employment you have to earn your keep. Forget your degrees and all that crap you have listed on your résumé – it means very little. In this new world, you have to live, breathe, eat, sleep each and every product and service the company you work for provides. You have to show you want to make a difference.
If you want to be indispensable you will have to be different. You have to position yourself so that your boss things are you as someone that cannot be replaced. It’s that simple. Make your mark by innovating. Be the ring leader. Be the go-getter. Great companies are built by forward thinkers – the people who are indispensable.
Determine your own destiny by being remarkable. Anything else makes you disposable.
